Mid Size Antique Trunk 28"L x 15"D x 14"H - A solid antique trunk with lots of character to both the polished brass buttons, 150+ year old seasoned pine wood body with "tongue-and-groove" construction! A beautiful rich golden honey patina with lots of reddish browns and character!
An Early to mid 19th Century Fully Restored Antique Trunk For Sale w/ Identified Civil War vintage! Exterior originally covered in leather with interior covered in a thin paper this trunk maker used "tongue-and-groove" method of construction along with brass caps to secure the black iron bands holding the trunk together which is very reminiscent of the Jenny Lind trunks produced during this pre-Civil War and Civil War of time. New leather handles and brass end caps, and lid stay were installed. No liftout tray or lock. Fortunately the original manufacturers label was found, professionally sealed, and saved during restoration process: "John Wheelock, 245 Main Street, Worcester MA" which is documented and confirmed by Google Books using the Worcester Directories of the time to have owned this trunk from the early 1800s up until the mid 1860s before either his son or brother took over operation and changed the label.
Once both the exterior leather covering and interior paper lining were removed the trunk was then scrubbed thoroughly and lightly sanded to further reveal the fantastic grain of the wood inside and out. We also found that the hand crafted construction of this antique trunk used the "tongue and groove" method of firmly securing top, bottom and side pine planks together (see photograph below). This method of wood construction makes a very strong bond and aesthetically pleasing look back day.
Additionally, the Original Brass Securing Caps were carefully polish to reveal their beautiful patina as contrasted against the black iron bands but also complimenting the rich golden patina of the pine wood. The tongue-and-groove of the pine planks, brass caps, and iron banding are definitely 1840s to early/mid 1860s construction methods and techniques.
New leather handles, end caps, rear hinges, and lid stay were installed with two coats of spar varnish applied to both interior and exterior surfaces. This antique trunk comes without a working lock or liftout tray.
Of important note is that during restoration the original manufacturers label was able to be saved and professionally sealed! The manufacturer was "John Wheelock, 245 Main Stree, Worcester MA" and he owned his trunk making shop from the early 1800s to the early-mid 1860s before either his brother or son, H.M. Wheelock took over the shop under a different label. So the evidence of the type of construction employed and the original maufacturers label makes it conclusive that this antique trunk is of Civil War vintage, and most likely pre-Civil War.
