junior officer dinner plate w square knot

Junior Officers Mess, Ensign and Lieutenant Junior Grade (EN 01 & LTJG 02) with Squareknot Insignia or Topmark

Up until the post-WWII time frame all naval junior officers had their own separate mess, or place to have meals and relax. This special area was for all Ensigns and Lieutenant Junior Grade Officers (EN 01 and LTJG 02 designations) and separate from the Wardroom Officers which were of higher rank.

The Navy used various insignia (or topmarks) put on all of its naval dinnerware to denote the "mess" that it was for. In the case of the Junior Officers Mess that insignia was a nautical "Squareknot" which was considered one of the most basic knots that would tie two pieces of rope together that a sailor needed to learn

Post WWII the Junior Officers Mess was combined with the Wardroom Officers Mess to form a single mess and set of dinnerware using the Fouled Anchor. So therefore the Junior Officers Mess dinnerware is rare and hard to find!

The Pirate's Lair also has the matching silverware with a squareknot but this cannot be purchased separately and can only be purchased along with other china dinnerware.
